The T18 group is one of many groups of related whales belonging to the Bigg’s (transient) population of killer whales. There are four killer whales belonging to the T18 group. Esperanza (T18), named after Esperanza Inlet on the west coast of Vancouver Island, is the mother of travel companion Mooyah (T19). Mooyah, named after Mooyah Bay in Nootka sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island, has two offspring – Galiano (T2B) and Spouter (T2C). Mooyah’s first calf, T19A, was born in 1984 but disappeared five years later and is sadly presumed dead. On two occasions in the fall of 2003, the T18 group were observed attacking and killing minke whales off the southern coast of British Columbia.
